Correctly installing a subwoofer is the key to achieving stunning and clear bass effects. If it is just randomly placed and connected, it is easy to get cloudy, loud or unbalanced sounds. Here are a few core requirements that must be noted.
1、 Positioning: The primary factor determining bass quality
The position of the subwoofer in the room has a decisive impact on its performance.
Avoid wall corners: Keeping the subwoofer close to the wall corner will excite multiple low-frequency standing waves, resulting in excessive sound, buzzing, and difficult to control. Although it feels "more shocking" this way, it lacks clarity and speed.
Use the "Sofa Technique" to find the best spot:
Temporarily place the subwoofer on the listening phoneme (emperor position) where you often sit.
Play a continuous bass movement (or pink noise) in the room, then slowly crawl and move.
Listen carefully and find the ideal location in the room where the bass sounds full, clear, and natural, which is where to place the subwoofer.
Goal: To perfectly blend the bass with the sound of the main speaker, sounding like a whole rather than isolated roars from a corner.
2、 Correct connection: Ensure unobstructed signal flow
One choice connection method: Use a professional coaxial audio signal cable to connect the "Subwoofer Out" or "LFE Out" interface on the AV amplifier to the "LFE In" or "Line In" interface on the subwoofer.
Avoid using regular speaker cables: Unless the subwoofer is passive, signal cables should be used as they can transmit purer and stronger anti-interference signals.
3、 Parameter setting: the soul of fine tuning
Frequency division point setting
In the amplifier settings: Enter the speaker settings menu of the AV amplifier and set the size of the main speaker and surround speakers to "small". In this way, low-frequency signals below the division point will be automatically handed over to the subwoofer for processing.
Recommended value: Set the crossover point of the subwoofer in the amplifier to 80Hz. This is a universal reference value that can achieve a smooth transition between the subwoofer and the main speaker. If the subwoofer has a frequency divider knob, it should be set to high (or directly used in LFE mode) when using the LFE interface.
Phase adjustment
Function: Ensure that the sound waves emitted by the subwoofer are synchronized with the sound waves of the main speaker, avoiding mutual cancellation and causing bass weakness.
Method: Play a continuous bass and adjust the phase knob (0 ° -180 °) of the subwoofer while listening, finding the position that makes the bass sound solid and full.
Volume (gain) adjustment
Principle: The volume of a subwoofer is not meant to be overwhelming, but to supplement and solidify the foundation. First adjust its gain knob to the middle position (such as the 12 o'clock direction), and then use the amplifier's automatic sound calibration (such as Audyssey, YPAO, etc.) or manual fine-tuning to make it harmonious with the main speaker.
4、 Power supply and shock absorption
Independent power supply: Connect the subwoofer to a wall socket to avoid sharing the same power strip with other high-power devices such as amplifiers, in order to reduce current interference.
Shock absorption measures: If the floor is prone to resonance, you can consider placing a marble or specialized shock absorber pad under the subwoofer to reduce unnecessary vibration and make the sound cleaner.
